International Women’s Day (IWD) has a rich history that dates back to March 8, 1857, when female textile workers in New York City organised one of the first recorded strikes by women. They protested unfair working conditions, demanding shorter workdays and fair wages—laying the foundation for future movements advocating for women’s rights. Over the years, this movement gained momentum, and in 1911, the first official International Women’s Day was observed. Today, IWD serves as a global moment to reflect on progress, call for change, and celebrate the courage and determination of women who have played extraordinary roles in shaping history.
